About the Gay Phoenix Website...GayPhoenix.com has been a personal project of mine since 1997. I moved to the area back in 1993 and with the introduction of the internet, found myself looking for places and things to do within the gay community. Looking around the web and on the search engines, It seemed that many other cities around the US and globe had their own community site and something we lacked. I couldn't help but wonder why not? After all, Phoenix was already rated in the Top 10 largest cities in the United States back in the early 90's. I hope you enjoy the site and find some useful information about the area and our community. |
Phoenix at a glance...This is where you probably expect me to write something describing Phoenix as if looking through "rose colored glasses"... sorry, but I'm not a professional writer and it's just not my style. If you're new in town, just here on business or visiting family & friends, I will say that Phoenix is well laid out as far as cities go. It's easy to get around town and find your way... you gotta give credit where credit is due! Just keep in mind if you're going to be traveling during "rush hour" (between 6a - 9a or 3p - 6p), you probably should leave at least 30 minutes earlier than you think you should be leaving.
Most anyone planning a trip to Phoenix is well aware that we're located in the desert. If you expect to see lush greenery and plenty of shade tree's to escape our summer heat, you're coming to the wrong place. You might want to plan a trip to Portland instead (just be sure to pack a raincoat and umbrella.) Keep in mind we are known as the Grand Canyon State and I'm sure you've heard or read about that place! But we do have plenty of Saguaro cactus and beautiful desert landscapes with plenty of mountains for hiking and biking or just taking pictures to put in your album back home. Depending on what time of the year you're planning to visit Phoenix, you can drive a couple hours north, go snow skiing and then return to the valley and take a dip in the pool... all in the same day! If you're the kind of person that enjoys the nightlife, you'll fit right in. From high-energy music and dance to Country Western line dancing, or parking your butt on your favorite barstool down at the local watering hole reminiscing over the days (and flings) gone by, to watching local strippers get down and dirty. And, you'll find a host of a drag shows almost every night of the week. Phoenix has a reputation of being one of the gay nightlife hubs in the Southwest with one of the largest selections of gay bars around. And, you'll find the scene is pretty darn friendly and can be downright cruisy! There's plenty to do (depending on who you talk to) within the community outside of going to the clubs or drinking Mimosa's over a weekend brunch. Take a look at the list of groups located throughout the valley that include everything from backyard BBQ's with social groups and pool parties to sports activities, events and desert outings. |

What you can expect to find...In short? A local guide on the Who, What, When & Where's of Phoenix. This includes HIV/AIDS support groups, resources, organizations, general information about the community including gay and gay-friendly businesses, hotel accommodations, restaurants, apartments, realtors, clubs, social groups, theatre, and local events. I've also included online puzzles and an adult entertainment section filled with videos, photography and personal biographies for those times when you're bored! (it also helps pay the bills) Friends online...

As
for where to live? Just keep in mind that you don't want to live
on the east side of the valley (Mesa, Tempe, Chandler, Gilbert,
Apache Junction, Queen Creek) while taking a job on the west
side (Peoria, Goodyear, Glendale, Surprise, Sun City.) If
you're driving, it can take the better part of an hour to get
from one side of the valley to the other in any direction. You
might want to consider taking the Phoenix Light Rail pictured
here out near Arizona State University (ASU) in Tempe. Can't
forget to mention the boys out at ASU! If you're in
town visiting, be sure to check out Mill Avenue in Tempe, the
retail shops, the college boys, the restaurants, the college
boys, the nightlife, the college boys... there's always
something going on down on Mill Ave! Did I mention the good
looking college boys?
